“Everything that you remember, you remember because it something that broke the pattern of your usual life. You don’t tell about some boring day where everything went exactly as expected. So already, any story you would choose to tell is necessarily fueled and probably has a game involved, because your telling it cause’ it’s funny.”

No Regrets (MP3 link) by Billie Holiday on ARC-VO3276 (1936)

This is one of those recordings that once it starts in, you know it’s going to be one of your favorites. Billie Holiday’s exasperated “No Regrets…” with accompanying clarinet is a lovely upbeat start to jaunty little tune that until the other day I had never heard before.

Scandal Time: Spitzer Linked to Prostitution Ring (NY Times)

In what may be considered the biggest scandal to hit New York politics, Govenor Eliot Spitzer has “informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring…”

This from the first-term Democrat who promised ethics reform. Some ethics.

Another LD Show Down

Last night my improv group, LD & The Scientist, had another show after a 2 month hiatus of not performing. As always, these hiatus’ fill me with uncertainty of how we will perform, especially as we’ve had trouble scheduling practice recently. And let’s face it, an improv group that doesn’t practice is going to have issues down the road.

Luckily for us, last night was not the night for problems. We had a really solid show. Our suggestion was “potent” and we attacked the suggestion with ferocious attention to grounding scenes. Our scenes contained a couple who romanced through spicy chili, A researcher and intern handling dangerous material with spatulas, inducing pregnancy through pheromones, and a scene about the illicit chemical warfare of spanish fly in high-school.

Unfortunately, because of an electrical glitch a huge purple light came on 8 minutes into our show. Being caught in the moment, enjoying ourselves way too much, and not knowing how long we had been on stage, we assumed this was out wrap it up light. We wrapped it up in just over 9 minutes.

Later, after the show, we realized that in mistakenly thinking faulty wiring was a message from above end our show, we had inadvertently made it “potent.

Damn we’re good.
